Wearing only loin clothes, these more than 9,000 men crowded into the Saidaiji Temple in Okayama, Japan on Saturday hoping to grab one of the lucky talismans thrown by priests.
According to the Wall Street Journal, this ritual dates back to 1510.
There are "a handful of minor injuries every year," based on the Journal's report. It isn't all naked fun and games at all then.
A sacred wood is collected from the nearby temple which is used to create the lucky talisman as part of the preparations for the Hadaka Matsuri, or Naked Festival at Saidaiji Temple on 4th of February 2015 in Okayama, Japan. These 9,000 men will battle to grab the pair of the lucky sticks thrown by the temple's priests.
The talismans are no ordinary talismans because monks pray on it twice daily in the weeks leading up to the Hadaka Matsuri, or Naked Festival.
You can't be just naked in joining the weird Festival though. You will need a loincloth and a paper with vital health and contact information in order to participate.
Part of the Hadaka Matsuri, or Naked Festival is to escape the freezing water that is part of the purification process.
